BS 8214:2026 published, replacing the 2016 fire door code of practice

BSI published BS 8214:2026 on 20 March 2026. It supersedes BS 8214:2016 and now carries the title Fire-resisting and smoke control doors — Practical considerations concerning specification, design and performance in use — Code of practice.

What has changed at the level of scope

The title itself is the first thing to notice. The 2016 edition addressed fire-resisting doorsets; the 2026 edition brings smoke control doors explicitly into scope. Smoke, not flame, is what makes an escape route unusable first, and a code of practice that treats smoke control as a named part of door performance rather than a consequence of fire resistance is a more honest reflection of what a fire door is doing in a building.

What it means for inspection work

BS 8214 is a code of practice, not a regulation. It does not create a duty. What it does is set out what good specification, installation and in-use performance look like, which is the benchmark an inspection is implicitly measured against when a finding is challenged.

The practical consequence is a currency question rather than a technical one: anyone quoting BS 8214 in a specification, an inspection report or a remedial schedule needs to be clear which edition they are working from, because a reference to "BS 8214" without a year now spans two documents a decade apart.
