Automatic fire detection removes the dependency on a person noticing a fire and acting. Detectors sense heat, smoke or flame, the control panel processes the signal, and the sounders raise the alarm — all without human intervention. Manual call points remain part of the same system, so a person who spots a fire first can still trigger it directly.
Category grading
Systems are specified by category, and the category reflects what the system is there to protect. Categories in the L range are designed to protect life, from full coverage down to detection limited to escape routes; categories in the P range are designed to protect property. Which category a building needs follows from its fire strategy, its occupancy and the risks identified in its fire risk assessment — it is not a free choice made at installation.
Why the grading matters in practice
A system installed to the wrong category can be fully functional and still leave a building inadequately protected, because coverage was never specified where the risk actually sits. That is a common finding on older installations where the building's use has changed since the system went in but the detection layout never followed.
Testing and maintenance
Detection is only as good as its upkeep: weekly user testing of a call point in rotation, and periodic servicing by a competent contractor. Records of both matter — a system in good order with no evidence of testing is difficult to defend when it is examined after an incident.
